From Theatre Drama to Bollywood Comedy: Varun Sharma's Unexpected Career Path
Bollywood actor Varun Sharma has revealed the surprising origins of his comedy career, disclosing that he exclusively performed serious dramatic roles during his formative theatre years before unexpectedly finding success in comedic cinema.
Speaking ahead of his upcoming film Rahu Ketu, Sharma reflected on his theatrical beginnings in Chandigarh, where he spent three to four years performing at national level productions.
Serious Theatrical Foundations
"I used to do only serious plays," Sharma explained, citing works by Anton Chekhov, Ashwatthama, and Andhayug. "From my street theatre to main stage plays, national level productions, everything was serious. I had never attempted comedy."
The actor described comedy as significantly more challenging than dramatic performance. "Imagine a person sitting and you have to make him laugh. It is a tough thing. It's easy to generate emotions, to scare someone, but to make someone laugh, you don't know what mood they're in."
The Fukrey Transformation
Sharma's transition to comedy began with his 2013 debut film Fukrey, though he approached the role with considerable uncertainty. "I never knew that I could make people laugh or make people smile," he admitted.
Director Mrigdeep Singh Lamba played a crucial role in recognising and developing Sharma's comedic potential. "He is one man who has actually nurtured me and shaped me. I didn't know my own potential. Till date, I think he knows my potential more than I do," Sharma said, noting their collaboration on seven films.
Using a metaphor to describe his development, Sharma added, "I was like a piece of clay. The shape that he has given me is what I became."
Audience Recognition and Career Direction
The positive audience response to Fukrey proved transformative for Sharma's career trajectory. "I saw the film, and I saw people laughing and smiling. That gave me a lot of contentment and happiness," he recalled.
This recognition influenced his subsequent film choices, leading to roles in Toli Ki Doli, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, Dilwale, Arjun Patiala, Roohi, and Wild Wild Punjab.
Personal validation from family members further reinforced his commitment to comedy. "My mother sees the film, my sister sees the film, my family sees the film, they're smiling, they're laughing. So I started loving it."
Professional Approach and Future Projects
Despite his success, Sharma maintains an intuitive approach to his craft. "Till date, I don't know the method. What do I prepare? I prepare what my directors make me prepare. I choose not to over-prepare because then the rawness will go."
After more than a decade in the industry, Sharma acknowledges his professional evolution while embracing new challenges. His upcoming film Rahu Ketu, featuring Fukrey co-star Pulkit Samrat and Shalini Pandey, is scheduled for theatrical release on January 16.
