Political Restraint in Nigerian State Leadership Change

Former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has called for political reconciliation in Edo State, urging newly installed Governor Okpebholo to focus on development rather than pursuing investigations against his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.

Call for Political Maturity

Speaking at a public gathering in Benin City on Sunday, Wike emphasized the importance of moving forward for the state's progress. Despite acknowledging personal grounds for supporting an investigation, he advocated for a more constructive approach.

'We must pass through this process in life, move on for the development of Edo State. Don't do it, I'm the one that should have told you pursue this man, I know what I passed through,' Wike stated during his address.

Democratic Transition and Governance

The former governor's remarks highlight the delicate nature of political transitions in Nigeria's democratic system. He notably referenced divine providence in the transfer of power, stating that 'If it were to be his [Obaseki's] power, you won't be here but God has told him, you don't have it and I have given it to whom I want to give.'

Personal Acknowledgment

In a remarkable display of political candor, Wike acknowledged his own role in past political conflicts. 'I know how pained you are and what you passed through... I was part of it because I humiliated you,' he admitted, demonstrating a shift towards reconciliation in state politics.
