Israel–Iran Ceasefire: The End of the 12-Day War or Just a Pause?

Ceasefire declared under U.S. mediation

On June 24, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, putting an official end to a 12-day escalation marked by airstrikes, drone attacks, and intense rhetoric. Both governments reportedly accepted the terms, but the immediate aftermath left observers skeptical of how real — or lasting — the agreement would be.

Missile fire continues despite truce

Shortly after the announcement, air raid sirens were heard again in southern Israel. Iranian rocket fire reportedly resumed, with Israeli defense systems intercepting several missiles. The technical ceasefire may be in effect, but tensions remain dangerously high.

Human cost on both sides

Iran’s attacks caused casualties in Beersheba, where at least four civilians were killed. In retaliation, Israel targeted Iranian military positions, with reports of key figures being eliminated. The conflict, though short, left deep scars on both sides.

Gaza violence intensifies

While Iran and Israel halted direct hostilities, the ceasefire did not bring peace to Gaza. On the same day, Israeli forces reportedly killed at least 25 Palestinians and injured dozens more as they waited for humanitarian aid. For many in the region, “ceasefire” is a relative term.

Markets react, but uncertainty remains

Oil prices dropped over 3% following the announcement, as fears of disruption in the Strait of Hormuz subsided. Meanwhile, U.S. markets responded positively, with futures rising. Israel reopened Ben Gurion Airport and resumed partial evacuations of foreign nationals. Still, skepticism persists — especially as Iranian officials warned that a real ceasefire depends on the cessation of all Israeli aggression.
