Delhi teen's rape and murder sparks outrage as four arrested
A 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped and murdered in Delhi, with four suspects now in custody, including three minors. The case has reignited concerns about violence against women in India's capital, where the body lay undiscovered for two days before being found severely decomposed in a field.
The victim, a school dropout who had moved to Swaroop Nagar years ago, was searching for work to support her parents. Police said she was living separately from her family at the time of the attack.
How did the attack unfold?
On the night of Friday, September 11, the girl went to meet a 17-year-old acquaintance, described by investigators as a friend. The other three accused, including a 19-year-old identified as Shivam Ganesh, were friends of the teenager.
According to police, the 17-year-old was the first to rape her. When the victim threatened to report the crime, he called his friends, and the four then sexually assaulted her. Officials said all were under the influence of alcohol.
After the assault, they took her to a field and stabbed her more than six times, attempting to conceal the body under leaves and mud before fleeing in a tempo. Investigators are still determining whether the rape occurred inside the vehicle or in the field.
What did police find at the scene?
Residents alerted authorities on the morning of Sunday, September 13, after spotting dogs feeding on a body near Kushak Road in Swaroop Nagar. When officers arrived, they found a heavily decomposed body with a mutilated face, a severed right hand, and multiple stab wounds.
Initially, police could not determine the body's gender due to the extent of decomposition. A medical examination later confirmed rape and revealed eight wounds on the body.
Though it had been only two days, the body was decomposing very fast, likely due to how exposed it was to the elements. The face was not recognisable, said the first investigating officer.
Based on the family's account and post-mortem findings, investigators registered a case of murder, rape, and destruction of evidence.
How were the suspects tracked down?
A team led by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Lokeshwaran R and ACP Ravinder Ahlawat began piecing together the events. With no eyewitnesses reporting the victim on Saturday or Sunday night, police scanned more than 50 CCTV cameras covering the area and adjoining routes.
Footage revealed a tempo moving near the scene around the time of the crime. Despite poor visibility of the registration plate, officers traced the vehicle's movement across multiple camera locations and identified the driver, whose 17-year-old brother often used the vehicle.
The footage also showed four young boys inside the tempo. The boys had fled their homes but were soon identified. A night-long search operation during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday led to the apprehension of all four suspects in Khadda Colony, Swaroop Nagar.
Police recovered two knives allegedly used in the crime, along with the clothes the accused were wearing. At least three of the suspects have confessed to raping the minor, according to two police officials.
Why did the family not report her missing?
The victim's parents did not file a missing person complaint. Police said the family told them she often went out and returned after a few days, which is why her absence initially went unnoticed.
What happens next?
The 19-year-old has been formally arrested, while the three juveniles, aged 16 and 17, have been apprehended. The case has drawn attention to the broader issue of sexual violence in India, where legal reforms and policing practices continue to face scrutiny.
Authorities are continuing their investigation, including determining the exact sequence of events and whether additional charges will be filed.
