Carlton's Draft Dilemma: Winning Culture vs Walker Bid
Carlton's resurgence under coach Josh Fraser has created a structural conflict with the AFL's draft system, threatening the club's ability to match an early bid for father-son prospect and generational talent Cody Walker. The more the Blues win, the fewer draft points they retain, placing the acquisition of Walker in jeopardy if the club plays finals in 2026.
Why Does Winning Hurt Carlton's Draft Position?
Under current AFL draft rules, clubs can only use two picks to match a bid on academy and father-son prospects. Clubs finishing between fifth and 10th on the ladder also lose a 10 per cent discount on draft points. Carlton currently sits just one game outside the top eight after five consecutive wins under Fraser, and further improvement would erode the points required to secure Walker.
Hawthorn legend Jordan Lewis outlined the tension on Fox Footy's On the Couch, noting that Carlton must weigh short-term success against long-term list management.
