Broncos' Finals Hopes Hang by a Thread After Eighth Loss
The Brisbane Broncos' premiership defence faces a structural crisis following an eighth consecutive defeat, leaving the club in 15th place on the NRL ladder. Coach Michael Maguire maintains the team can still reach the finals, but the reigning champions must now win all eight of their remaining regular season games to feature in the post-season.
Can the Brisbane Broncos still make the 2026 NRL finals?
Following a 28-16 defeat to the Cronulla Sharks at Suncorp Stadium, the Broncos' path to the finals has become mathematically perilous. Losses to lower-ranked teams, including the Dragons and the Titans, have defined this mid-season slump. Speaking to reporters after the match, Maguire refused to concede that the season was over.
Well why not? I've got a lot of belief in the team. I've got a lot of belief in the group. We have got a lot of guys that have been coming into the game, that I guess if you had everyone healthy, they wouldn't be playing. But we're getting a lot of blokes that are getting experience now and we'll get obviously a lot of people coming back over the next couple of weeks.
Maguire pointed to the enforced selection changes due to injury as a contributing factor, noting that several inexperienced players have had to step up. The coach expects the tide to turn as senior players return from injury and representative duties.
Key personnel returns and disciplinary actions
The Broncos' upcoming bye in Round 19 provides a critical window for player recovery. Maguire indicated he expects to have his full roster available for Round 20. The return of State of Origin representatives Pat Carrigan, Payne Haas and Reece Walsh will significantly bolster the squad.
Additionally, key playmakers Ezra Mam, who is recovering from an AC joint injury, and Adam Reynolds, managing a hamstring complaint, are expected to be fit. Billy Walters also completed a successful return from a major knee injury in the Queensland Cup.
However, the club also dealt with a disciplinary issue this week, dropping Josiah Karapani for an off-field discretion. When asked about his preferred halves pairing for Round 20, Maguire remained noncommittal, stating he would assess the roster through the bye week.
What went wrong against the Cronulla Sharks?
Discipline and errors proved decisive in the loss to Cronulla. The Broncos conceded 10 penalties, double the count of the Sharks, and committed 12 errors throughout the match. Maguire acknowledged these technical shortcomings but praised the players' effort.
Yeah they were, a bit of attention to detail there definitely cost us, but the effort from the players was excellent. They're fighting, you know, and they're working hard to get the result, to flip it from where we are at the moment. Again, it wasn't our night. But the fight and the effort in the players has been excellent.
Stand-in captain Kotoni Staggs echoed his coach's pragmatic optimism, emphasizing the resilience within the playing group.
Like Madge said, I believe in the group and got the confidence there. Obviously you don't see what we see in the four walls back at the Broncos. I believe that we can do it and you know, time will tell.
Can the Brisbane Broncos overcome their discipline issues?
Overcoming a 10-penalty and 12-error performance requires significant structural correction. For the Broncos to mount a realistic challenge for the top eight, reducing ill-discipline and completing sets will be as crucial as the return of their star players.
