A Distinguished Career in Cricket

Simpson's remarkable journey in cricket spanned multiple decades, during which he played 62 Tests and later became Australia's first full-time coach. His leadership was instrumental in revitalizing Australian cricket's competitive spirit throughout the late 1980s and 1990s under Allan Border and Mark Taylor.

"Bob Simpson was one of the greats of Australian cricket and this is a sad day for anyone fortunate to have watched him play or who benefited from his wisdom," said Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird.

Statistical Excellence and Achievement

Simpson's Test career, which began in 1957 against South Africa, yielded impressive statistics:

  • 4,869 runs at an average of 46.81

  • 71 Test wickets as a legspinner
  • Record-breaking 1,381 runs in 1964
  • Career-best score of 311 against England in Manchester

Leadership During Crisis

In a demonstration of his commitment to Australian sporting excellence, Simpson came out of retirement in 1977 at age 41 to lead the national team during the World Series Cricket crisis, showcasing his dedication to the sport's traditional values.

Legacy and Impact

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese highlighted Simpson's contribution on X: "Bob Simpson's extraordinary service to Australian cricket spanned generations. As a player, captain and then era-defining coach, he set the highest of standards for himself and the champions he led."
